WiMax, radio and aerial fiber: how to bring internet where there is no fiber
Rural internet in Lleida: the best alternative when fiber doesn't reach
Lleida province has 231 municipalities, and in many of them fiber optic hasn't arrived yet or will take years to arrive. If you live in a farmhouse, in a small village in the Pyrenees or in the Franja de Ponent, in a second home in Montsec or in a warehouse in an isolated industrial park, you know exactly what we mean.
Good news: rural internet in Lleida is perfectly possible. At BIVID we've been deploying alternatives to fiber for areas where major operators don't invest because "it's not profitable". And it works very well.
Why doesn't fiber optic reach many towns in Lleida?
Because installing fiber is expensive. Major operators (Movistar, Orange, Vodafone) deploy fiber where they can recover their investment: dense urban centers. In areas with 20 houses scattered over 10 km² there's no business for them, so they simply don't reach there.
Public "broadband expansion" plans (UNICO, ERDF rural) cover part of the problem, but they're slow: they arrive at the end of the legislative term, depending on tenders and deployment timelines.
Meanwhile, many people in the Lleida countryside are stuck with 3 Mb ADSL, expensive satellite or no internet at all.
Alternative technologies to fiber for rural areas
These are the real options that work in the rurality of Lleida:
1. Professional radio link
An antenna on your roof connects via radio waves to a base station located at an elevated point (tower, repeater, community antenna). If there's direct line of sight with the base station, speed is stable and similar to basic fiber: 30 to 100 Mb real speeds, low latency, ideal for remote work and video calls.
- ✅ Real speed 30-100 Mb
- ✅ Low latency (ideal for video calls, moderate gaming)
- ✅ Doesn't depend on the operator's cabling
- ❌ Needs line of sight with the base station
- ❌ Installation requires external antenna
2. WiMax
Similar to radio link but with multi-user access technology. Works well even when line of sight isn't perfect. Typical speeds of 10 to 50 Mb. Ideal for farmhouses or scattered settlements where pure radio link isn't viable.
3. Fixed 4G / 5G (FWA)
Router with SIM card that connects to the mobile network. Works anywhere with mobile coverage. Ideal as a temporary solution or for second homes. Speeds of 20 to 200 Mb depending on coverage and contracted plan. Limitation: many plans have a monthly data cap.
4. Satellite (last option)
Starlink and similar. Works literally anywhere on the planet, but it's expensive (50-100 €/month + equipment) and latency is high. We only recommend it when none of the three above options are viable.
What technology works best in your area?
It depends on where you are. At BIVID we do a free personalized study: we check your location on the map, verify what base stations are nearby and if we have line of sight, and recommend the best option for you.

Real use cases: who is Bivid's rural internet for
Second home or weekend house
If you have a farmhouse, apartment in Vielha, or house in Montsec that you use on weekends, radio link with no commitment is ideal. You pay only while you use it, without having to maintain a fixed line for 12 months.
Telework in a village
More and more professionals have moved to towns in Lleida seeking quality of life. With radio link of 50-100 Mb you can do Zoom/Meet/Teams video calls without problem, upload files to the cloud, and work remotely with full guarantees.
Digital agriculture and livestock
Smart irrigation systems, cameras in barns, IoT sensors in crops, remote management of pools and wells. Everything requires stable internet in areas where there's no fiber. Radio link + fixed IP is the winning combination.
Rural tourism / vacation rental homes
If you manage vacation apartments or a rural house, your guests will appreciate having fast WiFi. Good internet can be the difference between 5-star or 3-star reviews.

Frequently asked questions about rural internet Lleida
Do I need mobile coverage at my home for the radio link?
No. Radio link is a technology independent of the mobile network. You only need your home to "see" one of our base stations.
How do I know if there's coverage at my address?
The fastest way is to call us or send your address by WhatsApp. We do a free simulation from the office before traveling: we avoid wasted trips and you know right away if the technology fits your home.
What happens with bad weather? Does it cut out?
Modern radio link is very robust. Heavy rain can reduce speed a bit during storms, but it doesn't cut out. Snow and wind don't affect the service.
Is it compatible with professional video calls?
Yes, perfectly. The latency of the radio link is comparable to basic fiber. Zoom, Teams, Meet, WhatsApp Video work without interruptions.
Can I have a fixed IP to set up cameras or a server?
Yes. The optional fixed IP adds 5 €/month and allows you to configure remote access to security cameras, home automation, NAS, POS systems, etc.
What if it doesn't work in the end, am I locked in?
No. There's no commitment. If the service doesn't convince you, we cancel it without penalty. Equipment collection is free.
How do I contract rural internet in Lleida?
Three steps:
- Send us your address (web, WhatsApp or store). We confirm in minutes if we have coverage.
- Free technical visit to measure signal and orient the antenna. We schedule the day that works best for you.
- Installation in a single visit. We leave your network working, router configured and WiFi tested.
If you're one of the lucky ones in Lleida with fiber available, we're also going to tell you: it's better for you to contract fiber than a radio link. At BIVID we recommend what saves you money, not what we're most interested in selling.
